How Many Rhinoplasty Surgeries Can a Patient Have?

Understanding Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty

If you’ve undergone rhinoplasty, you understand that the initial decision making process was likely exciting, incredibly important, and surprisingly challenging in many ways. Altering your appearance permanently, whether through surgery, a tattoo, or some other way, is very meaningful and can be very emotional whether it’s something you’ve dreamed of for years or a more recent but firm aesthetic shift. In some cases, perhaps an injury or illness led to the need for rhinoplasty. Whatever the case, the decision was not made lightly.

A rhinoplasty is designed to shape and sculpt the nose into the ideal contours and create harmonious overall facial balance. For many patients, an additional goal, or the primary one, may be to correct troublesome breathing issues and offer renewed airflow. That’s why if a rhinoplasty fails to accomplish the initial goals, it can be devastating. If you had a rhinoplasty and the results were not what you had hoped for, or if a revision still didn’t achieve your goals, you may be wondering what your options are.

Reasons for Multiple Rhinoplasty Surgeries

If corrections need to be made after an initial rhinoplasty, this is typically referred to as a revision rhinoplasty. When it comes to revision rhinoplasty, there are multiple reasons why a patient might consider this treatment. A common reason is that the resulting aesthetic simply does not match what the patient requested. It may be too conservative, an overcorrection, or was not well done overall. The initial rhinoplasty may not have solved a functional issue such as deviated septum or other railway concerns. In some cases, it might be due to significant and unexpected complications such as scarring or cartilage collapse.

It should also be noted that there are also multiple causes. We’ve all heard about botched “nose-jobs” where an inexperienced or unqualified surgeon does not produce quality results. However, in some cases, when a patient is not satisfied with results, it may be that the surgeon and patient were simply not on the same page as far as results. It may be that the patient’s skin elasticity or internal structure integrity simply wasn’t viable for the outcome that was requested. It’s important for both the patient and the surgeon to understand the true nature of the initial surgery when considering a revision.

What Might Determine Eligibility For A Revision Rhinoplasty

In many cases, a revision rhinoplasty is a completely reasonable approach, and the anatomy and patient requests allow for a successful second attempt. When considering a second (or beyond) procedure, it is important to manage realistic expectations and seriously consider risks.

Most patients who are good candidates for revision rhinoplasty are trying to correct asymmetry, bridge or tip concerns, or septum problems further. They should be in good health and, importantly, at least a year after their initial surgery. Allowing enough time for healing and getting used to a new appearance is key.

Those with heightened risks like chronic health conditions may not be eligible, or if there are unrealistic aesthetic goals that simply cannot be met safely. Ultimately, it’s at the discretion of a plastic surgeon whether a patient is a good candidate for revision rhinoplasty. That’s why choosing a surgeon with integrity, superior qualifications, and lots of relevant experience is crucial.

Choosing an Experienced Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Since rhinoplasty, and revision rhinoplasty especially, is a delicate procedure that requires specific knowledge for ideal outcomes, choosing a facial plastic surgeon with head and neck, or otolaryngology board-certification is often the best choice. Beyond board-certification, a surgeon should have experience specifically performing revision rhinoplasty with good outcomes.

When meeting with a surgeon, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Ask how many of these surgeries they’ve performed, their percentage of successful outcomes, and their approach to the procedure. A good surgeon should be open and honest with you about their qualifications and what they may–or may not–be able to do to address your specific concerns.

Achieving Optimal Results with a Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Once you begin working with a surgeon who is confident that a revision rhinoplasty is a good option for you and that they can achieve the results you’re looking for, it’s time to start preparing. Be sure to follow any instructions leading up to surgery to encourage the best possible healing process and scar minimization. Be committed to taking time for recovery and following all guidelines provided by your surgeon for maximum comfort and the fewest side effects. While a revision will be similar to the initial rhinoplasty, there may be extra precautions to consider to achieve the desired outcome.

Finally, remember, there are options for you and with a skilled surgeon, it is possible to achieve great results with a revision rhinoplasty and see the nose you’ve always wanted to see.
