Rhinoplasty is a decision people make to feel more comfortable in their own skin. The recovery process plays a significant role in the outcome, and knowing what to expect can make it easier to navigate. Some changes will be visible within the first few weeks, but full healing takes time, and patience is key.
Dr. Nima Shemirani, a double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, shares what patients can expect in the days, weeks, and months after surgery, along with practical advice for navigating the healing process with confidence.

@drnima It all depends on what type of rhinoplasty you’re getting done! Be sure to talk to your surgeon about healing expectations 😃
The first few days after surgery are often the toughest. Swelling peaks around the second or third day, and many patients wake up feeling puffy, congested, and tired. Bruising around the eyes is usually very light but fades over time. During this phase, rest is essential. Keeping your head elevated, avoiding unnecessary movement, and following your surgeon’s instructions all help set the stage for a smoother recovery.
Congestion can be frustrating, but it’s important to resist the urge to blow your nose. Mild bleeding or drainage is normal, and while it might feel unsettling, it’s part of the healing process. By the end of the first week, most patients have their splint removed. The nose will still be swollen, but this is often the first time patients get a real look at their new shape. It won’t be the final result just yet—but it’s a start.
By the second week, most of the bruising has faded, and swelling starts to go down. This is when people typically feel ready to return to work and social outings. The nose will still be adjusting, and the tip may remain swollen for a while. It takes time for the finer details to settle in.
Exercise should still be approached with caution. Gentle walks are encouraged to promote circulation, but activities that increase blood pressure—like running or heavy lifting—can slow down healing. Sun exposure should also be minimized, as it can affect scar healing and swelling. Patience during this phase pays off in the long run.
At this stage, swelling continues to decrease, and the nose begins to look more refined. Patients start to see the results they hoped for, but some residual swelling, particularly in the tip, remains. For those with thicker skin, this process may take longer, but gradual changes are happening beneath the surface.
Most patients can return to full workouts by this point, though anything that risks direct impact to the nose should still be avoided. Minor swelling may still come and go, especially in the morning or after a long day. Healing is happening, even when it’s not immediately visible.
Most swelling has resolved by month six, and the nose is settling into its final shape. However, healing continues subtly for up to 3 years depending on skin thickness. The skin continues to adapt, and minor refinements in definition will still occur. The waiting period can be challenging, but understanding what to expect can make the process easier.
Recovery depends on a mix of time and self-care. Keeping sodium intake low helps minimize swelling, while drinking enough water helps the body flush out excess fluids. Avoiding smoking and alcohol is also important, as both can slow healing and increase the risk of complications. Sleeping on your back and avoiding glasses that rest on the nasal bridge can help maintain the integrity of the healing nose.
Beyond the physical recovery, mindset matters. It’s normal to have moments of impatience or doubt, especially in the early months. Giving the body time to adjust leads to better, more natural results in the long run.
Rhinoplasty recovery happens in stages, with progress becoming more visible over time. While the nose may look different within the first few weeks, refinement continues for months. Trusting the process and allowing time for healing makes the experience less stressful and ultimately more rewarding.
