Our Innovative Approach

What is Piezosurgery?

A rhinoplasty procedure means changing the shape or size of the nose, creating better proportions, and improving aesthetic appearance. While rhinoplasty techniques have advanced considerably over the last 100 years, many surgeons still use the same old methods, literally hammer-and-chiseling the bone to reset it.

The Piezosurgery technique allows Dr. Nima and Dr. Parsa to gently cut and move bones using a special ultrasonic scalpel. This gentle procedure offers more precise results, less bruising, less swelling, and less need to cut away bone and tissue. In other words, Piezosurgery can provide full rhinoplasty results with a much smoother, swifter recovery time.

What is the Piezosurgery procedure like?

The Piezosurgery (Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty) Procedure

Piezosurgery, also referred to as piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty or piezoelectric rhinoplasty, is an advanced facial plastic surgery procedure that contours and improves the nose with a unique device that creates ultrasonic vibrations to precisely cut and shape bone.

Like a rhinoplasty, your anesthesiologist will place you under general anesthesia before surgery. Once the anesthesia has taken effect and you are fully asleep, your surgeon will make a small incision across the columella (bridge of skin between your nostrils) to access the bone and cartilage. This technique is known as an open rhinoplasty approach, which is preferred over the closed rhinoplasty approach as it allows for more visibility and control.

Next, your surgeon will use the Piezo device to make highly precise and controlled changes to your nose. This device is incredibly powerful yet gentle enough to cut, sculpt, and shape without breaking or fracturing the bone or damaging nearby soft tissue.

Once your surgeon has shaped and contoured your nose based on your individual treatment plan and aesthetic goals, he will close the incisions with sutures or stitches. After your surgery, you are placed in our serene recovery room to rest until the anesthesia wears off, and you can be discharged and taken home by your arranged driver.

Your Piezosurgery Journey

What conditions does Piezosurgery address?

In all these conditions, Piezosurgery's key advantages are its precision, selective cutting of hard tissues while sparing soft tissues, reduced bleeding, and generally faster healing times compared to traditional surgical techniques.

Sinus Lift Procedures

How it helps: The ultrasonic vibrations can gently separate and elevate the sinus membrane without tearing, reducing complications and improving bone graft success rates.

Bone Grafting

How it helps: Piezosurgery enables surgeons to harvest bone grafts with great precision, preserving the quality of the graft material and minimizing damage to donor sites.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

How it helps: Enables surgeons to make delicate modifications to nasal bones with minimal soft tissue damage, leading to less post-operative swelling and faster recovery.

Cyst and Tumor Removal

How it helps: Piezosurgery enables surgeons to carefully remove bone surrounding cysts or tumors while preserving nearby vital structures, improving safety and precision.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

How it helps: In some surgical interventions for sleep apnea, Piezosurgery allows for precise modification of facial bones with less trauma, potentially improving outcomes.

Craniosynostosis Correction

How it helps: In pediatric cases where skull bones have fused prematurely, Piezosurgery allows for delicate and precise reshaping of cranial bones with minimal risk to the underlying brain tissue.

Advantages of Piezosurgery

What are the benefits of Piezosurgery?

Piezosurgery is a cutting-edge rhinoplasty procedure that uses the latest technology and innovative techniques to perform nose jobs more holistically. Aside from delivering beautiful results, there are also several other advantages of choosing Piezosurgery over your traditional rhinoplasty procedure.

  • Highly Accurate – The advanced Piezo device is smaller and more precise, giving your surgeon better control and more freedom to accurately and artistically shape and contour your nose into your desired look.
  • Easier Recovery – Since the Piezosurgery method is less intrusive and less likely to damage surrounding tissues, you benefit from an easier recovery time and a faster healing process.
  • Better Visibility – Piezosurgery offers the unique benefit of providing better visibility and, therefore, better results, as the improved accuracy results in a blood-free surgical site.
  • More Comfort – Piezosurgery eliminates the need for intimidating drills, hammers, and chisels, delivering a more comfortable surgery experience. You will also experience less stress leading up to surgery and reduced surgical trauma afterward.
  • Elevated Safety – With the heightened precision and accuracy of the Piezo rhinoplasty technique, your surgeon can elevate the safety of your procedure by reducing the risk of damaging soft tissue and infection.
  • Faster Procedure – Thanks to high-quality controls and reduced hand pressure, your surgeon can perform Piezosurgery faster and more efficiently, resulting in less time under anesthesia.

Redefining Facial Harmony

Am I a good candidate for Piezosurgery?

This rhinoplasty technique can be a good option for any nose job patient, including men and women who wish to subtly change the size or shape of their nose.

We recommend meeting with your surgeon for a consultation, allowing them to verify that you are a good candidate for a safe, successful rhinoplasty procedure. The best candidates:

  • Are in good overall physical health
  • Do not have any underlying conditions that would prevent them from proper healing
  • Have spoken with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon and have realistic expectations about the procedure and the recovery

Cutting-Edge Care

Recovery From Piezosurgery

Any time you have a rhinoplasty procedure performed, you can expect some temporary side effects. Bruising, swelling, and tenderness are all normal, as is nasal congestion. We typically recommend that patients take at least a week off from work and up to a month off from strenuous activity.

With Piezosurgery, the side effects associated with rhinoplasty are minimized. You may experience mild bruising and swelling, but most patients find that these side effects fade considerably within just a few days. For many patients, Piezosurgery expedites their recovery from rhinoplasty.

Maximum Results

Piezosurgery Results

The timeline for seeing results from Piezosurgery varies depending on the specific procedure, but generally:

  • Immediate post-op period: Less swelling and discomfort compared to traditional techniques
  • 1-2 weeks: Significant reduction in initial swelling and bruising
  • 4-6 weeks: Most patients can see preliminary results of the procedure
  • 3-6 months: Final results become apparent as all healing is complete

It's important to note that while Piezosurgery can contribute to excellent outcomes, results also depend on factors such as the surgeon's skill, the patient's healing capacity, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. Your surgeon will provide you with personalized expectations based on your specific case.

Piezosurgery

Frequently Asked Questions

Piezosurgery is generally less painful than traditional surgical techniques. The ultrasonic technology allows for precise cutting of bone while minimizing damage to soft tissues. This results in less post-operative pain and swelling. However, some discomfort is still normal during recovery, and your surgeon will provide pain management options.

While Piezosurgery is considered safer than many traditional surgical methods, all surgical procedures carry some risks. Potential risks include infection, bleeding, and reaction to anesthesia. Specific to Piezosurgery, there's a minimal risk of thermal damage to tissues if the device is used improperly. However, these risks are generally lower than with conventional surgical techniques.

The cost of Piezosurgery varies depending on the specific procedure, the complexity of the case, and your geographic location. While it may be slightly more expensive than traditional surgical methods due to the advanced technology used, many patients find the benefits in terms of precision and faster recovery worth the investment. It's best to consult with a qualified surgeon for an accurate cost estimate.

While Piezosurgery is versatile, it's not suitable for all bone surgeries. It's most commonly used in oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, and some orthopedic procedures. It's particularly beneficial for surgeries requiring precise bone cutting in areas close to delicate soft tissues. Your surgeon will determine if Piezosurgery is appropriate for your specific case.

Recovery time after Piezosurgery is typically shorter compared to traditional surgical methods. Most patients experience less swelling and discomfort, allowing for a quicker return to normal activities. However, exact recovery times vary depending on the specific procedure and individual healing factors. Generally, initial recovery takes 1-2 weeks, with full healing occurring over 3-6 months.
